The True Story of the Faithful Dog – Hachiko

Hachiko

Akitas are considered to be among the most loyal of all dogs, and anyone who has heard the amazing true story of Hachiko won’t disagree.

In January 1924 a professor at the Japanese Imperial University brought home a two-month old Akita puppy. Dr. Ueno named the pup Hachiko.

The following year was a wonderful time for Hachiko and his new master. Akitas are large dogs, and Hachiko grew to be over ninety pounds. This beautiful white dog accompanied Dr. Ueno to the Shibuya train station every morning, where Dr. Ueno would say goodbye to Hachiko and head to the university. And every day when Dr. Ueno returned home Hachiko would be waiting for him at the train station and the two would go home together. Anyone could see the powerful bond between the large Akita and his master.

hachiko_a_dog_s_story15

If things had continued like this, the story would still be one of admirable faithfulness from a dog to its master. But that was not the fate of Dr. Ueno and his loyal Akita Hachiko.

May 21, 1925 was like any other day for the pair. In the morning, Professor Ueno left Hachiko at Shibuya Station. But when Hachiko returned to Shibuya Station in the evening, his master was nowhere to be found. Though Hachiko waited, Dr. Ueno never showed up.

Dr. Ueno had died from a stroke earlier that day.

Akitas are very loyal dogs and do not bond easily with new people. Hachiko was sent away to another area of Japan where there were relatives of Dr. Ueno’s who could take care of him. Because Hachiko had only belonged to Dr. Ueno for a little over a year, they probably hoped that the Akita would make a new family with them. But Hachiko didn’t care. He ran away from the family and returned to the train station to wait for his master. The family realized that they couldn’t keep the big Akita dog from heading to Shibuya Station everyday, so they gave Hachiko to Dr. Ueno’s old gardener who still lived in the area.

Every evening Hachiko would return to Shibuya Station and wait for Dr. Ueno to get off the six-o’clock train. And every day, Hachiko was disappointed. Still, he never missed a day of hoping that his master would return to him.

The commuters noticed the Akita waiting every day at the station. Some of them had known the pair when Dr. Ueno was still alive, and everyone who heard of Hachiko’s story was touched. People petted him and gave him food. Months passed, then years. Still Hachiko kept his vigil. A newspaper heard of the dog’s story and Hachiko became a Japanese celebrity. To commemorate his loyalty, a statue of the Akita was erected at Shibuya station. Hachiko was even present at the ceremony!

Despite the people’s loving intentions, Hachiko basically lived as a stray. He would call no place home except where Dr. Ueno was, and since Dr. Ueno was nowhere, Hachiko had no home. He lived on the street, fought other dogs, and ate scraps and handouts. Hachiko got sick with worms and mange, but because so many people admired him he was given treatment by a veterinarian. Hachiko became an old, scarred dog, with one ear up and one ear down, and no longer looked like the purebred Akita that he was.

It was March, 1935 when Hachiko finally died. The old Akita was found in a Shibuya street. He had waited for his master for almost ten years. Many people were saddened by Hachiko’s death, but others say that he was finally at peace and could go with his master wherever it is we go when we die. Hachiko’s story of loyalty touched the hearts of many people all over the world. In Japan, his statue at Shibuya Station is still a popular meeting place. There is even a ceremony to remember Hachiko every year on April 8. A Japanese movie, Hachiko Monogatari, was made in 1987 and was considered a smash-hit.

hachiko-1

This year, Hachiko will hit the big screen for the second time. The movie stars Richard Gere and is called Hachiko: A Dog’s Story. Richard Gere plays the part of Dr. Ueno, and a Japanese Akita named Forest will play the part of Hachiko. Besides Richard Gere, Joan Allen and Jason Alexander will also have parts in the movie. A Dog’s Story has some big differences separating it from the true story. For one, the movie is not set in Japan, but in Rhode Island, and in the movie Hachiko is originally a stray. Still, Hachiko: A Dog’s Story will touch people’s hearts and hopefully inspire them to discover the true story of this loyal Akita dog.

Eyes are the mirrors of the soul – The Blue-eyed Actor was a true Gem

paul-walker-s-girlfriend-crying-since-his-sudden-death

Paul Walker was best known for his action-packed films, but many are remembering the late actor, who died on Saturday in a fiery car crash, as a big softie with a huge heart.

During the holiday season several years ago, the “Fast & Furious” actor walked into Bailey Banks and Biddle Jewelers in Santa Barbara, California, and, according to sales associate Irene King, what happened next was practically out of a feel-good Hollywood movie.

King told CBS Los Angeles that an associate nudged her and said, “There’s Paul Walker.”

“Oh, OK, yeah,” King replied with a smile. “I said, ‘Yeah, he’s a nice-looking man.’”

Walker was browsing for bling at the same time as a soldier who had just finished his first tour of duty in Iraq, and was looking at engagement rings with his fiancée.

According to King, the pair saw a ring set they liked, but it was way too expensive and boasted a hefty $10,000 price tag.

In comes Walker. The blue-eyed actor called the store’s manager and told him to put the ring that the couple was looking at “on his tab,” but to keep his identity hidden. He promptly walked out of the store. According to King, the store never told the couple that Walker was the man behind the purchase, and nobody ever knew the sweet story until now.

King posted the story on the 40-year-old actor’s Facebook page, among thousands of other anecdotes where people remembered him as “generous,” “loving,” and with a “heart of pure gold.” Walker was a dedicated supporter of charities like the Billfish Foundation, and could always be counted on to raise funds for those in need. He founded his own organization, Reach Out Worldwide, after the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

“To do something like that to a perfect stranger is just unbelievable,” King said.

In this case, it appears that Paul Walker’s generosity shined brighter than any diamond.

CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE SPYCIEST VOICE ON RAINBOW 94.1 FM

14

“What would you get if you add Rainbow with a touch of Spyce, you get Rainbow Lounge.” (In Rugged Man’s Voice) – That was the 1st stinger we heard as we tune to Rainbow 94.1fm earlier today to listen to Spycy.

This Port-Harcourt grown Aquarius, is lovely, witty, honest, real and original.
A native of Mbieri in Imo State and yes!!! She is Nigerian!!!
Spycy, born Stella Dike, on the 27th day of January, in a certain year, attended the Staff Nursery & Primary School of FGC, PH and went on to have her secondary education in Federal Government College, Port Harcourt. After there, got admitted into Imo State University, Owerri, where she acquired her B.Sc. Business Management.
Always had great passion for radio, music and entertainment. Little wonder, she never practiced what she had studied in school. Instead, she set out to start building a career in Broadcasting.
Her career on radio kicked off when she started out as an OAP on Cool fm, Port-Harcourt in 2009.
It was a dream come true but she wasn’t ready to settle in what some may call a ‘small market’ and this spurred her to make a move into the Lagos market.

Of course, this got her leaving Cool fm, hence, Port-Harcourt in 2011 and relocating to Lagos where she continued as a Radio Personality, this time, on Rainbow 94.1 fm.

What makes her happy?
Spycy loves to reach out and impart lives. (still do …chuckles).

Her interests include: music, dancing, movies (mostly, IQ challenging movies – detective, spy, also epic and horror movies), reading (mostly, spy and detective novels), writing and not forgetting: shopping!
Loves the internet, partying, travelling and meeting people.
Loves the art of facial make-up … looking smashing at all times is very important business, as a lady, you know…
Her pets remain her fingernails … for real! (laughs)

Favourite Quotes:
When you believe in yourself, you give others the permission to believe in you.
We are products of our experiences.
You can catch her on RAINBOW LOUNGE (12noon-4pm; Monday-Thursday) and WORK IT (8pm-11pm; Saturday) on Rainbow94.1fm.

SPYCY
This delectable radio diva is one to look out for as she always comes up on your radio to spice up your day.
She didn’t get here overnight, though.
Spycy, short for Spycystar was born STELLA DIKE on the 27th day of January (in a certain year).
She fell in love with radio while in school, although she was studying Business Management, at the time, in Imo State University, Owerri.
Graduating from school at quite an early age, she decided to give it a try as she got her very first gig on Cool 95.9 fm, Port Harcourt in 2009.
It was a dream come true for the young Aquarius and she didn’t take the platform forgranted as she seized every opportunity to learn as much as she could, about the job … on the job.
She started making waves almost immediately on the airwaves in Port Harcourt, but after about two years, she got hungry for more and set out to invade the Lagos market.
This diva found herself in Lagos, 2011 and realized the industry isn’t as rosy as she thought, but that didn’t stop her. It may have discouraged her a bit but she just wasn’t yet to throw in the towel as she kept pushing.
While in a sort of ‘hiatus’ from radio, she discovered something else she could do with her God-given VOICE – radio jingles, radio dramas and even screen acting.
Now, she wasn’t able to land an acting gig, but she got to voice some jingles and voice some characters in some radio dramas, but guess what…these didn’t satisfy her as her actual aim was getting back on radio.
So, she kept pushing – ‘eyes on the prize’ and suddenly towards the end of 2012, it happened! … She landed another gig on the radio! This time, Rainbow 94.1 fm.
23

Get a feel of her spice as she dishes on ‘Rainbow Lounge’ (12noon-2pm; Monday-Thursday) and trust me, you just can’t get enough of her so, she comes right back Saturday night on ‘Work It’ (8pm-11pm; Saturday) on Rainbow 94.1 fm.
When Spycy is not on the radio, making YOU happy, she watches movies (mostly, IQ challenging movies – detective, spy, also epic and horror movies).
Spycy loves to travel, meet people, browse the internet, listen and dance to music … and yes! She loves shopping!
Spycy is a Voice-over artiste, as well and she writes scripts.

Mandela portrait breaks South Africa record

Nelson_Mandela_by_Josephine_Death

JOHANNESBURG (AP) A photographic portrait of Nelson Mandela has been bought by a private art collector in New York for $200,000, the highest price ever paid for a local portrait, organizers said Tuesday.

The money will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, currently under construction in Johannesburg, and to the World Wildlife Fund. The portrait is part of a series of 21 portraits of South African icons

The portrait, by 21 Icons creator and photographer Adrian Steirn, depicts Nelson Mandela’s face reflected in a mirror.

“I wanted Madiba to hold a mirror so that we could see a man reflecting on his life. As he reflects on his life, we reflect on his legacy and our future,” Steirn said, using Mandela’s clan name.

The remaining portraits, including those of former Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu and former South African President F.W. De Klerk, will be auctioned at an event in March 2014, with proceeds donated to the charity of each subject’s choice.

Eykyn Maclean, a New York and London-based gallery, facilitated the sale of the Mandela portrait.

The anonymous buyer said about the portrait: “I am honored to own what has already become an iconic image of one of the greatest statesmen the world has ever known. In a single frame the photographer has captured the essence of dignity, principle, conviction and courage in this great man from whose life’s work and dedication to a greater cause we all have much to learn, and by which I am inspired daily.”

The construction of a children’s hospital has been a longheld dream of Mandela’s and before he fell ill he had campaigned for funds for its construction. The state-of-the-art hospital is scheduled to open late in 2014 and will be a 200-bed facility providing world-class pediatric care.

Mandela, 95, is in critical but stable condition, under intensive medical care at his Johannesburg home, after being discharged in September from a lengthy hospitalization.
